内容提要：

This study examines the effect of air pollution on technological innovation. We find robust evidence that air pollution impedes innovation at the city level and firm level, using i) an ordinary least squares regression, ii) a regression discontinuity design that relies on China’s Huai River Policy, which provides coal for heating only to cities north of the river, and iii) an instrumental variable approach with thermal inversions as the instrument for air pollution. Our study further examines the mechanism driving this effect and finds that lower employee innovation efficiency and higher migration of inventors to low-pollution cities drive our results.
